PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Alcorn State University baseball team grabbed the first game of its road series at Arkansas – Pine Bluff, defeating the Golden Lions 5-4 on Friday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
Diego Lopez-Molina went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a double to lead the Braves at the plate. Two other Alcorn players had 2-for-5 appearances as Tyler Daniels and Kalum Banks, Jr. added to the offensive effort. Daniels added one RBI and two runs, while Banks had one RBI.
Four Braves took the mound for Alcorn in the victory over UAPB. Jermel Ford received his first pitching win, starting the contest by throwing 5.0 innings with four strikeouts, two earned runs, and four hits against. Michael Lorenz was credited with the save. He entered the game in the eighth inning to pitch for 1.1 innings.
Alcorn took an early lead with a run in the first frame. Jaylon Lucky scored Daniels on a double to left field.
UAPB answered in the second inning to take a 2-1 advantage. A bases-loaded walk scored one runner for the Golden Lions, and a hit by pitch scored a second.
In the third inning, the Braves regained the lead. Lopez-Molina sent Banks and Jamaal Green home on a single to left center.
The Braves extended their lead to 5-2 in the fourth as Daniels singled to right field to score Jeremiah Farmer. Daniels then came home on a one-out stolen base play.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff attempted a comeback in the eighth. They added two runs to the board, but more was needed. The Golden Lions dropped game one 5-4.
Alcorn State will return to the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex on Saturday, April 8, when they take on UAPB in game two of the weekend series. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
