Softball Drops Close Contest in First Round of Tournament Versus Alabama State

GULFPORT, Miss. – Kiri Parker went the distance in the Lady Braves opening contest of the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament. Despite the effort, Alcorn could not stay ahead of Alabama State, and a late-inning run cost the Lady Braves the game. Alcorn fell 1-0 to the Lady Hornets in round one.

Parker kept the ASU hitless through 4.5 innings, while Alcorn had three. In the top of the second, Mycah Hall sent a single to first base, Genise Wells singled down the left line in the third, and Kristian Edwards singled to right center in the top of the fifth.

Parker's streak ended in the bottom of the fifth when Kindall DeRamus sent a hit to left field. Fortunately, the side was closed on the same play. Bailey Greenlee, pinch-running for Jasmine Rogers, made it safely to second base but was thrown out at home.

The contest remained relatively quiet throughout the sixth inning. In the top of the frame, Wells reached first on balls but would end Alcorn's time at bat when she was caught stealing. Alabama State collected another hit in the bottom of the inning, but no runs were scored.

The top of the seventh came and went for the Lady Braves with a strikeout and two flyouts closing the side.

The game was won in the bottom. Alabama led off with a single through the left side, and a fielder's choice put runners on first and second. DeRamus connected for another hit, despite Jamyiyah's scramble at second base to get the out. On the same play, pinch-runner Zoee Disroe came home to score the run and end the game.

In the circle, Parker was credited with the loss. She threw for 6.2 innings with to strikeouts, five hits, one earned run, and four walks.

Alcorn moves to the elimination bracket of the tournament and will face Florida A&M tomorrow, Wednesday, May 10, at noon.
