VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The Alcorn State University women's tennis team took on McNeese State University in a Sunday afternoon match. The Lady Braves fought hard but were defeated by the Cowgirls, 1-6.

In doubles action, Nicole Kells and Doaa Mohamed were defeated by McNeese's Arina Gamretkaia and Anastasija Adeikyte, 1-6. Alcorn's Zoe Crimmel and Natalija Nikolic fell to Emma-Lou Pommiers and Ariane Monlleo Sanchis, 5-7. At No. 3 doubles, Aanya Rao and Oihane Villanueva Lopez competed for the Lady Braves and dropped the match to the Cowgirl's Tiana Fox and Aina Domingo-Bernabeu with a score of 2-6.

Rao competed in the No. 2 spot for Alcorn in singles and snatched a win by picking up the last two sets over Domingo-Bernabeu with scores of 4-6, 6-0, and 10-7. Kells competed in the No. 1 spot in single for Alcorn and fell to Gamretkaia, 3-6 and 0-6, respectively.

In No. 3 singles, Nikolic went head-to-head with Adeikyte and fell in two sets, 1-6 and 0-6. Crimmel played at No. 4 and was defeated by Pommiers in two sets, 2-6 and 2-6. At No. 5, Villanueva Lopez competed for Alcorn and fell to Maria Wang Martinez in three sets with scores of 4-6, 6-4, and 7-10. In No. 6 singles, Rao hit the court for ASU and was defeated by McNeese's Fox in two sets, 1-6 and 0-6.

The Lady Braves will be in action again on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at home as they face Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The match is set for 2 p.m.
