Men’s Basketball Travels to UAPB, MVSU

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University Braves basketball is ready for the weekend matchups with the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State University. Alcorn faces the Golden Lions on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2:35 p.m. and the Delta Devils on Monday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

    ASU (5-17, 4-5 SWAC) enters the contest after suffering a 67-78 loss to Grambling State University on Monday night. Jeremiah Kendall was the top scorer for the Braves with 21 points and five rebounds. He was followed by Jalen Hawkins with 13 points and Stephen Byard with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Jeremiah Gambrell rounded out the bunch with 10 points.

    For the season, Kendall leads the Braves in points and rebounds averaging 16.3 points and 6.7 boards per game. Jeremiah Gambrell is second in scoring with 11.9 points per game. Byron Joshua rounds out the top three scorers with 11.1 points per game and keeping the offense rotating averaging 3.8 assists per game.

    UAPB (10-12, 5-4 SWAC) defends their home court after a razor thin 74-75 to Prairie View A&M University on Monday night. The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Rashad Williams, who had 28 points. Ismael Plet added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Joe French chipped in as well with 10 points.

    Williams is the scoring and assist leader averaging 17.2 point and 3.4 assists. He is followed by French averaging 15.2 points while Lonnell Martin, Jr. pulls up the rear averaging 11 points and three assists. Plet leads the team in rebounds averaging seven per contest.

    MVSU (0-22, 0-9 SWAC) dropped a 77-83 game to Pine Bluff on Feb. 3. The Delta Devils finished with four players in the double-digits. Areko Gipson led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. He also tallied three assists. Danny Washington also recorded 22 points as well as three rebounds, one assists, and one steal. Rayquan Brown racked up 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Donovan Sanders scored 12 points, dished out seven assists, pulled down three rebounds, posted one block and came up with a steal.

    For the season, Terry Collins leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists averaging 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.
