THIBODAUX, La.– The Alcorn State University volleyball team fell to Nicholls State University in straight sets, 25-10, 25-18, and 25-11, in a non-conference matchup at the David R. Stopher Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The loss puts Alcorn at 0-4 on the season, while Nicholls improved to 4-2.
Alcorn struggled to find offensive rhythm throughout the match, finishing with a hitting percentage of .077 in the first set. Despite a stronger showing in the second set, where the Braves improved their hitting to .188, Nicholls' offense proved too strong. The Colonels recorded a .400 hitting percentage in the opening set and never looked back.
   Â
Sydney Valentine led the Braves with four kills, while
Erin Mims and
Demya Tate each contributed two kills.
Harmoni Carswell anchored the defense with six digs, while
Kennedy Brooks and
Jalayah Hamby both added a block assist.
Nicholls' Leah Castro and Tierney Terrell led the offensive attack with a combined 21 kills, while Jordan Gamble was a force at the net, tallying three blocks. Alcorn's defense had difficulty handling the Colonels' powerful serves and consistent play at the net.
The Braves will look to bounce back in their next match as they travel to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. for the Cowgirl Classic from Sept. 12-13. Alcorn will play host, McNeese, on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. and the University of Incarnate Word on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
