Braves Defeat Delta Devils, 42-21, in Dominant Road Victory

Itta Bena, MS — Alcorn State University secured an impressive 42-21 victory over Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium. The Braves' balanced offensive attack and strong defensive presence helped them improve to 2-3 on the season (1-0 in SWAC play), while Mississippi Valley State fell to 0-5.

Offensive Leaders:

  • Jacorian Sewell led the charge on the ground for Alcorn State, racking up 164 rushing yards on 12 carries with an explosive 55-yard touchdown run. Sewell's dominant performance, averaging 13.7 yards per carry, set the tone for the Braves' offense.
  • Quarterback Xzavier Vaughn contributed with both his arm and legs, passing for 105 yards on 8 completions and adding a 5-yard rushing touchdown. Vaughn connected with Damien Jones for an 11-yard touchdown pass and kept the offense moving efficiently.
  • Deablo McGee had a standout game as well, hauling in 4 catches for 60 yards, including a 30-yard reception. McGee also scored a key touchdown, extending Alcorn State's lead.

Special Teams:

  • Kicker Noah Kiani was perfect on the day, going 2-for-2 on field goals, nailing kicks from 47 and 43 yards. He also went 4-for-4 on extra points, providing steady scoring for the Braves.

Defensive Standouts:

  • Edwin Summerour had a stellar performance in the secondary, recording 3 interceptions and returning them for a total of 17 yards. His ball-hawking ability helped shut down Mississippi Valley State's passing attack.
  • Malachi Bailey was a force on the defensive line, notching 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss, disrupting the Delta Devils' offense throughout the game.

The Braves' defense forced four interceptions overall and held Mississippi Valley State to just 109 rushing yards on the day. Alcorn State's defense made key stops and limited the Delta Devils to just 303 total yards compared to the Braves' 446 total yards.

Alcorn will host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Oct. 5 for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
