HOUSTON, Texas – Alcorn State football delivered a commanding performance on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas Southern 33-14 at Shell Energy Stadium. The Braves racked up 446 yards of total offense while holding the Tigers to just 42 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert efficiently guided the Alcorn offense, completing 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. Running back Reggie Davis paced the ground game with 87 yards on 20 carries and three rushing touchdowns.
Wide receiver Jarvis Rush led all receivers with seven receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Tyran Warren added four catches for 63 yards, while Ja'Coby Matthews contributed four receptions for 42 yards along with 45 yards in punt and kickoff returns.
Alcorn struck first with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by Davis' two-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. After Texas Southern evened the score, the Braves responded with another Davis touchdown, this time from 15 yards out, to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
Tolbert continued to direct the offense with precision in the second half, keeping the Tigers off balance. Davis found the end zone once more from two yards out early in the third quarter, and kicker Lorenzo Garcia added field goals from 25 and 32 yards. Tolbert later connected with Rush on a two-yard touchdown pass to seal the win in the fourth.
Defensively, Alcorn State was solid across the board. Eric Thomas Jr. recorded a sack, Bakari McCall intercepted a pass to end a first-half threat, and Geoffrey McKelton led the team with six tackles. Orlandus McLaurin added four tackles, including one for loss, as the Braves held the Tigers scoreless for two straight quarters.
With the victory, Alcorn State improves to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Braves return home to Jack Spinks–Marino Casem Stadium next Saturday, November 8, to host Southern University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
