Birmingham, AL - Alcorn State women's basketball faced a tough challenge Monday night on the road, falling to UAB, 70–32, at Bartow Arena in Birmingham. The contest marked the Lady Braves' first true road test of the season as they closed out non conference play.
The Lady Braves showed early energy and competitiveness in the opening quarter. Kiarra Henderson got Alcorn on the board with a driving layup, and Lauren Nelson knocked down a jumper to help the Lady Braves stay within striking distance early. Alcorn trailed 15–10 after the first period and remained within range through the opening minutes of the second quarter.
UAB began to stretch the lead behind efficient perimeter shooting and transition scoring, taking a 36–20 advantage into halftime. Despite the deficit, Alcorn continued to battle on the glass and create second-chance opportunities.
In the second half, UAB's shooting depth proved decisive, as the Blazers extended the margin through consistent three-point shooting. Alcorn continued to rotate players and gain valuable minutes, with several Lady Braves contributing across the stat sheet.
Nakia Cheatham finished with four points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Kiarra Henderson added six points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Arene Iyekekpolor contributed six points on a pair of three-pointers, and Jayda Bowen chipped in seven points, including a three-pointer, off the bench. Leyah Houston added two points, two rebounds, and an assist, while Chrishunti Walker scored two points and pulled down a rebound in limited minutes.
Alcorn State totaled 32 points, 31 rebounds, and 10 assists on the night, gaining experience against a strong UAB squad to open the road portion of the schedule.
The Lady Braves will remain on the road as they continue non conference play, traveling to Auburn on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
