LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State volleyball team opened the 2025 season on its home court Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19) to Nicholls State inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Despite the final score, the Lady Braves showed promise with several strong individual performances. Sophomore outside hitter Rylan Jones led Alcorn with nine kills, while Courtney Carter added eight kills and 10 points to pace the attack. Setter Juliana Henao turned in a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs, and libero Erin Mims anchored the defense with a team-high 11 digs.
Nicholls was led by Madison Smith, who tallied 10 kills and 11 digs, while setter Isabella Padilla directed the Colonels' offense with 27 assists. The visitors finished with six team blocks compared to two for the Lady Braves.
Head coach Gabrielle Harris praised the effort despite the outcome. "We are a young group still learning to play together, but I was proud of how hard we fought," said Coach Harris. "Today's match showed us where we need to improve, and we'll use this experience to get better as we move forward."
With the loss, Alcorn moves to 0-1 on the season, while Nicholls improves to 2-0. The Lady Braves return to action next week as they continue non-conference play.
