Lady Braves Battle Hard in 1–0 Setback at SMU

Story Links

DALLAS, Tx. – Alcorn State women's soccer turned in a determined road performance Sunday afternoon but came up just short in a 1–0 loss to SMU at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

The Lady Braves (1–4–2) held the Mustangs scoreless for nearly the entire first half before SMU broke through in the 44th minute on an unassisted strike from Brooke Bunton. Alcorn keeper Maria Heuman kept her team within reach with four saves, including three after halftime, while playing all 90 minutes.

Alcorn generated seven total shots, four on goal, and earned three corner kicks while holding 40 percent of the possession. Forward Annick Zouma led the charge with two shots on frame. Mariana Ruiz Montoya added two attempts, and Deryn Doamekpor along with Elive Larissa Joso Luma each forced saves from the SMU goalkeeper. Midfielder Ainara Aldeano chipped in one shot.

The Lady Braves' back line of Viviana Sanchez, Yeirdan Padilla, Rebecca Kwoba, and Joso Luma helped limit the Mustangs to a single goal despite a 13–7 shot advantage and a 6–3 margin in corner kicks.

Alcorn returns to action next weekend when it begins Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Grambling State, looking to build on the strong defensive effort shown in Dallas.
