LORMAN, Miss. — Alcorn State women's basketball delivered a strong all-around performance Thursday evening at the Davey L. Whitney Complex, pulling away in the second half to secure a 59–43 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Prairie View A&M.
With the win, the Lady Braves improved to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in SWAC play, continuing to build momentum as conference action intensifies.
Alcorn State set the tone early, opening the game on a 12–2 run and never trailing. The Lady Braves carried a 16–5 advantage after the first quarter and extended the margin to 26–12 by halftime behind disciplined defense and steady control of the paint. Prairie View attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, but Alcorn State answered with timely stops and efficient scoring to close out the contest.
Nakia Cheatham led the way with a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds while anchoring the Lady Braves on both ends of the floor. Maya Claytor added 11 points, knocking down three triples to help stretch the defense. Ja'Sharreah Hunt chipped in nine points, while Chrishunti Walker provided valuable inside presence with seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Kiarra Henderson filled the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, and five assists, helping Alcorn State control the tempo throughout the night. As a team, the Lady Braves outscored Prairie View 36–22 in the paint and held the Panthers to 27.3 percent shooting from the field.
Alcorn State will look to carry its strong conference form into the weekend when the Lady Braves return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
