DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Alcorn State women's basketball continued its strong run on the road Thursday night, securing a 56–51 victory at Bethune-Cookman inside Moore Gymnasium. The win extends the Lady Braves' winning streak to three games and keeps them firmly in the conference race, as they now sit in a three-way tie for first place with a 5–1 league mark.
Alcorn State set the tone early, holding Bethune-Cookman to just six points in the opening quarter while building a steady advantage it would not relinquish. The Lady Braves led 26–19 at the half and maintained control through disciplined defense and timely scoring, even as the Wildcats pushed late.
Nakia Cheatham led the way with a game-high 12 points while adding nine rebounds, two steals, and a block. Ja'Sharreah Hunt provided a spark with nine points, knocking down a three-pointer and converting six free throws, while also contributing two assists. Lauren Nelson matched Hunt with nine points of her own and added four rebounds off the bench.
Leyah Houston delivered an efficient performance, scoring eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and grabbing three rebounds, while Jazlyn Johnson made the most of her minutes with eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting effort, including two made three-pointers. Kiarra Henderson filled the stat sheet with seven assists, four rebounds, and three points, helping orchestrate the offense throughout the night.
Defensively, Alcorn State forced 17 turnovers and turned those into key points, while the bench outscored Bethune-Cookman 25–13. The Lady Braves also controlled the game for more than 35 minutes, showcasing composure down the stretch as the Wildcats attempted to close the gap in the fourth quarter.
Alcorn State will look to keep its momentum rolling when the Lady Braves continue their Florida swing with a road matchup at Florida A&M on Saturday, Jan. 24.
