Story Links

JACKSON, Miss.- Alcorn State women's basketball closed the game with poise on Saturday afternoon, outscoring Jackson State 16–4 in the fourth quarter to secure a 49–45 road win at Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

After trailing 41–33 at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Braves tightened up defensively and found timely offense down the stretch to flip the game in their favor. Alcorn held Jackson State to just two made field goals in the final 10 minutes while scoring on multiple possessions to regain control late.

Kiarra Henderson led Alcorn State with a game-high 21 points, finishing 7-of-11 from the field and a steady 6-of-7 at the free-throw line. Henderson also added four assists and helped anchor the late rally. Nakia Cheatham followed with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Leyah Houston contributed six points, two assists and two steals off the bench. Ja'Sharreah Hunt chipped in four points and two assists, and Chrishunti Walker pulled down three rebounds while providing key minutes defensively.

Alcorn finished the afternoon shooting 34 percent from the field and forced 18 Jackson State turnovers, turning defense into offense throughout the game. The Lady Braves also matched Jackson State in points in the paint, 26–26, and limited the Tigers to just four points in the fourth quarter.

Jackson State was led by Mikayla Brown with six points and nine rebounds, while Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua added eight points off the bench. The Tigers shot 33.3 percent from the field but were unable to generate consistent offense late as Alcorn controlled the final minutes.

With the win, Alcorn State improved to 4–8 overall and 1–0 in SWAC play, opening conference action with a road victory.

The Lady Braves return to action Thursday when they travel to Montgomery to face Alabama State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
