Men’s Basketball to host Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn welcomes the two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Florida schools this weekend as Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M come to the Davey L. Whitney Complex for a pair of league Men's Basketball contests in Lorman, Mississippi, beginning Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. Bethune-Cookman enters atop the league, while FAMU sits in a three-way tie for fourth place.

RECAPPING ALCORN'S LAST GAME (at Mississippi Valley State)
Nick Woodard registered a team-high 16 points while Shane Lancaster supplied 15 of his own to help lead visiting Alcorn to a 74-66 win over Mississippi Valley State at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball contest in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
 
Nick Woodard was one of three Alcorn (players to reach double-digits scoring on the night, while Mississippi Valley State remained winless in league play despite receiving a game-high 28 points from one of the league's top scorers in Michael James.
 
• Alcorn outscored Mississippi Valley State by a commanding 20-2 edge in bench points.
• The Braves shot 52 percent from the field in the opening half, using a 5 of 13 mark from three-point range.
• A Jeremy Ellis free throw off the bench put Alcorn up 20-7 with 9:22 remaining in the first half.
• The Alcorn lead would swell to as many as 15 twice before the break, including a Davian Williams three-pointer – one of his two on the night, with 3:33 showing on the clock.
• As a team, Alcorn committed a season-low four turnovers, while going on to score 11 points off 11 MVSU miscues.
• In the second half, Alcorn managed an 18-point lead at 45-29 following a Travis Roberts jumper from the right elbow just under four minutes into the half.
• The Braves advantage stayed between a 15-to-18-point margin for much of the second half.
• The Delta Devils used a X'Zaevion Barnett driving layup and a Michael James three-pointer to cut the lead down to 57-47 with 7:24 remaining in the contest.
• MVSU made it single digits for the first time since the early stages of the first half when Daniel Mayfield hit on a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left.
• Woodard scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half, using a 5-for-6 showing at the free throw line in the process.
• The Delta Devils outscored the Braves 41-38 in the second half, with James returning from a first half injury to pour in 15 of his game-high 28 points in the second stanza.
 
ALCORN VS. BETHUNE-COOKMAN SERIES
▪ In a series that dates back to 1966, Alcorn leads the series, 7-4.
▪ The Braves won six consecutive against the Wildcats from 2023-25.
▪ Last season, the Braves swept the regular season meetings home and away, but the Wildcats won the SWAC Tournament contest between the two sides.
▪ BCU won this season's previous meeting 82-73 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
▪ The Braves are 3-1 lifetime against BCU in Lorman.
 
SCOUTING BETHUNE-COOKMAN
▪ Bethune-Cookman arrives to Mississippi atop the SWAC standings at 10-1, while holding a 13-11 overall record.
▪ BCU is scoring 75.1 points per game, and opponents score 77.7 points per game against the Wildcats.
▪ From the field, the Cats are shooting 45.6 percent, adding a 34.1 percent touch from three-point territory.
▪ In his second stint with the Wildcats, Jakobi Heady leads the team in scoring with 410 points (17.8 ppg). He is followed by Daniel Rouzan with 263 points (11.0 ppg).
▪ Ariel Bland is the team's leading rebounder with an average of 5.1 per contest, adding a team-high 31 blocked shots.
▪ Heady is equaled by Tyler Andrews with a team-leading 29 three-pointers across the campaign.
 
ALCORN VS. FLORIDA A&M SERIES
▪ In records going back to just 2015, the all-time series between the Braves and Rattlers is deadlocked at 5-5.
▪ The Rattlers have won the last three meetings against the Purple and Gold, including a 66-58 contest earlier this year in Tallahassee, Florida.
▪ From 2022 to 2024, the Braves took five in a row in the series.
▪ FAMU won the first-ever meeting 73-71 in Corpus Christi, Texas, back on Nov. 28, 2015.
▪ The last time these teams met in Lorman, it was the Rattlers staking a 65-64 victory.
 
SCOUTING FAMU
▪ Florida A&M will first take on Jackson State on the weekend, entering the "Magnolia State" with an overall record of 9-13, and a 6-5 mark in SWAC play. The Rattlers are coached by first-year head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward.
▪ The Rattlers had lost four on the bounce until taking a 100-96 win over Prairie View A&M in their last outing on Monday evening.
▪ The Rattlers shoot 43.6 percent from the floor, using a 33.5 percent touch from long range.
▪ FAMU is outrebounded by opponents by two boards per game in average.
▪ Two different Rattlers have scored 200 or more points across the season – Jaquan Sanders (246) and Tyler Shirley (242).
▪ The boards are controlled by Shirley with a team-leading 110 (5.0 rpg).
▪ Jordan Chatman is the team's top three-point threat having connected on 45, while Sanders has nailed 43, respectfully.
