PEARL, Miss. – Alcorn Baseball allowed seven runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night to fall 15-10 against Prairie View A&M in a non-conference matchup as part of the HBCU Power Series hosted by Major League Baseball (MLB) at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi.
Prairie View (2-0) broke open a tight game with a four-run fourth and a seven-run seventh, collecting 11 hits and drawing 12 walks. Alcorn State (0-2) answered with 10 runs on 10 hits, but stranded 10 runners and committed three errors.
The Braves jumped in front early.
With Alcorn up 1-0 after the first inning, Prairie View answered quickly with a pair of runs in the top-half of the second.
The Purple and Gold then responded with three runs in the bottom half.
An RBI double from
Kanious Davis highlighted the inning, and Alcorn added another run in the third to build a 4-2 lead.
The Panthers responded with a four-run sixth to reclaim control. They would add a run in the seventh before erupting for seven runs in the seventh to stake an 8-5 lead.
The Braved refused to go quietly. Alcorn scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to regain the lead, 10-8.
But in the top of the ninth, the Panthers erupted for seven runs and then held the Braves scoreless in the bottom half to claim the win.
Cooper Harris drove in three runs for Alcorn, while Davis finished with three RBIs.
Rayfield Adams III paced the offense from the top of the order with three hits and two RBIs, while Jaylyn Bennet added two hits and an RBI of his own.
Jacob Wingard got the nod on the bump for the Braves, allowing three runs (two earned) over 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. The Braves used seven pitchers overall. K. Davis (0-1) was charged with the loss in a relief effort.
Prairie View reliever Kaleb Thompkins (1-0) earned the win after working 2/3 of an inning in relief.
Despite weather expected to move into the Jackson area of Mississippi overnight with thunderstorms, Alcorn is slated to take on Jackson State back at Trustmark Park on Sunday at 6 p.m.
