VICKSBURG, Miss. – Alcorn Men's Tennis continues a three-match homestand at Hall's Ferry Road Tennis Courts on Sunday, Feb. 8, when the Braves host Lamar for a non-conference contest in Vicksburg, Mississippi, beginning at 10 a.m.
Alcorn (3-2) enters the weekend riding a three-match winning streak under interim head coach
Kersten Vanem-Walker. However, the Braves are seeking their first Division I win of the campaign, with their last three victories coming against junior college opponents, respectfully.
The Braves gathered a 4-3 win in their last outing having defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast in Alcorn's home opener on February 2, in Vicksburg. Four different Braves have a 3-2 record in singles play, including freshman
Vicent Llobell Buigues (Alicante, Spain) in No. 3 singles, as he owns a 2-2 record in that position. Meanwhile, sophomore
Tomas Grime (Lancaster, England) is 2-2 in the No. 4 spot for the Purple and Gold.
In doubles action, the tandem of Buigues and
Matthew Holl (Warriewood, New South Wales, Australia) owns a 3-0 record entering the weekend, all at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
SCOUTING LAMAR
Lamar comes into Sunday's match sporting a 2-7 overall record, but just a 1-3 record in true road matches throughout the spring season. The Cardinals had won back-to-back contests against Lubbock Christian and Southern (La.), respectively, until suffering a 4-0 setback to North Alabama on Saturday in Vicksburg. The Cardinals are under the direction of head coach Scott Shankles.
In recorded history, Lamar is a perfect 30-0 all-time against the Braves. The Cardinals took both matches of a doubleheader affair in the two sides' last meeting on the back of 5-2 and 4-0 scores back on January 25, 2025. Both of those contests took place in Beaumont, Texas.
In Lamar's 4-3 win over Lubbock Christian last week, Maxwell Lindstedt registered an exciting three-set win (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) in top-flight action. Monge Vicente turned in a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win in No. 4 singles play.
LAST TIME OUT FOR ALCORN (vs. Mississippi Gulf Coast CC)
Alcorn Men's Tennis turned in a 4-3 win Monday afternoon in defeating visiting Mississippi Gulf Coast at Hall's Ferry Road Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi. For the Braves, the win was the third of its kind on the bounce, while Alcorn enjoyed its home opener for the 2026 spring season.
With the match serving as an exhibition for Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Bulldogs stepped ahead 1-0 early-on in the match with the doubles point. Angel Hernandez and Ryland Buford posted a 6-1 win over Alcorn's doubles tandem of
Sebastian Griffiths and
Fabian Juarez on court one. Alcorn (3-2) forced a decisive doubles point with
Matthew Holl and
Vicent Llobell Buigues turning a 6-3 win in the Noi. 2 doubles position.
MGCCC collected the win at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2 decision as Santiago Enriquez and Connor Hartfield fought past the Braves' team of
Jorge Prats Navarrete and
Tomas Grime, respectfully. Vincent Llobell Buigues (Alicante, Spain) sparked Alcorn's singles success with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jan Bako at the No. 2 position. Braves sophomore
Tomas Grime (Lancaster, England) followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Santiago Enriquez on court No. 3, while
Fabian Juarez (Guanajuato, Mexico) defeated The Bulldogs' Warren Hudson 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.
Alcorn freshman
Jorge Prats Navarrete (Valencia, Spain) clinched the match for the Braves with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Brennan McGlothin over on court five. Mississippi Gulf Coast claimed two singles victories, led by Angel Hernandez's commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over
Matthew Holl (Warriewood, Sydney, Australia) in top-flight action, as Alcorn Head Coach
Kersten Vanem-Walker was forced to shift her lineup a spot prior to the start of the match. Cree Cunningham added another Bulldogs singles win, blanking Braves junior
Jeremiah Jones (Mesquite, Texas) 6-0 in the first set before closing out 6-3 at the No. 6 position.
