Williams Solid for Braves at UAPB

Alcorn drops contest on the road to Golden Lions

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Davian Williams scored 18 points to lead all Braves performers on Saturday afternoon as Alcorn fell 84-77 away to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball game inside H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
 
Alcorn (4-18, 3-7 SWAC) dropped back-to-back games – and their fourth consecutive on the road, while managing to have five players in double-digits scoring on the afternoon. For Arkansas-Pine Bluff (10-13, 7-3), the Golden Lions stay in second place of the SWAC Men's Basketball standings, while the Braves fall to 11th.
 
Braves Standouts
• For the first time in four games, Davion Williams scored in double figures with a team-high 18 points, connecting on 5-for-8 from three-point range.
• For Williams, his five (5) three-pointers were the most since knocking down six at LSU back on November 18.
• Williams led all Braves with 18 points, followed by Tycen McDaniels (12), Bryson Calamese (11), Nick Woodard (11) and Shane Lancaster (10).
• Jameel Morris, Williams and Lancaster combined to go 8 of 8 at the charity stripe.
• McDaniels amassed a 6-for-9 shooting touch from the field to go along with five steals, one block and an assist.
• All of McDaniels steals occurred in the second half.
 
How It Happened
• The Alcorn bench outscored UAPB 32-12 in that category.
• Alcorn managed to put five players in double-figures scoring, including the second time in the last three games.
• Defensively, Alcorn tallied 11 steals, scoring 15 points off 15 UAPB turnovers in the process.
• The Braves played just a rotation of eight on the night, with Travis Roberts the only starter not logging at least 20 minutes in the contest.
• UAPB led 49-34 at the half behind 65.4 percent shooting in the opening stanza. Meanwhile, Alcorn shot 46.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
• Quion Williams' layup pushed UAPB's lead to 14-6 at the under-16 timeout in the first half. The lead became nine at 26-17 when Williams connected on one of his two (2) three-pointers in the contest with just over 12 minutes showing on the clock.
• The Golden Lions ended the first half on a 7-1 run sparked by free throws from Milhan Charles and a layup from Dennis Asoro in the final 35 seconds.
• At the start of the second half, twice the Braves deficit was 20 – the latest at 56-36, when a Williams floater was good from just inside the paint.
• Alcorn finally got the deficit to single digits at 71-62 with 8:13 left in the contest after a pair of Woodard three-pointers. Woodard scored 11 points in the second half alone, shooting 4 of 4 from the floor, respectfully.
• The Braves outscored the Golden Lions 43-35 in the second half, despite UAPB hitting 11-for-12 at the foul line.
• With 30 seconds left, Lancaster drained a three-pointer from the elbow, bringing the Purple and Gold to within 80-77 – its lowest deficit since the opening minutes of the game.
