Troy Takes Sunday Match from Braves

Alcorn looks to rebound in SWAC play

VICKSBURG, Miss. – Sebastian Griffiths played tough in the singles top-flight Sunday morning, but Alcorn Men's Tennis was unable to topple visiting Troy at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts as the Trojans collected a 7-0 decision from the Braves in a nonconference men's tennis match in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Alcorn (3-15) looked strong in doubles play despite dropping the overall team point.

Troy (15-4) used the duo of Ryusei Miyazato and Stephan Tavares Noale in the No. 3 doubles position to defeat Alcorn's combo of Tomas Grime and Jorge Prats Navarrette 6-1. The Trojans collected the second match on court one with Luciano Alcocer and Yeray Andres Pastor stepping away from a valiant effort by the Braves team of Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues 6-4.

The Trojans concluded the doubles sweep with the best match of the area as Henrique de Brito and Thiago Drozdowski fought past the Braves duo of Sebastian Griffiths and Fabian Juarez by a thrilling 7-5 decision.

With Troy leading 1-0 in the match, the Trojans would eventually collect all six singles points available to complete the sweep.

Yeray Andres Pastor dispatched Alcorn's Vicent Llobell Buigues at the No. 3 position in straight sets using a 6-0, 6-1 line. On court six, Ryusei Miyazato defeated the Braves' Fabian Juarez 6-1, 6-0, thus allowing the Trojans a 3-0 advantage in the match.

The visitors collected the match point and a 4-0 lead overall with Hiiro Sakamoto of Japan taking down Alcorn's Tomas Grime 6-2, 6-2, respectfully.

The Trojans added to the lead in the fifth spot as Louis Boilevin fought past Jorge Prats Navarrete 6-2, 6-1. And it was Luciano Alcocer in the second spot using a 6-1, 6-2 line to defeat Matthew Holl of the Braves.

The most enticing singles matchup of the day occurred on court one with Alcorn's Sebastian Griffiths forcing a second-set tiebreak against Troy's Ausias Martin Melo. In the end, the Trojans No. 1 would defeat Griffiths in straight sets on scores of 6-2, 7-6(1).

Alcorn looks to tear a 13-match losing slide when the Braves step into Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play for the first time all spring next weekend as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama, where the team will face Southern (La.) and Alabama A&M in the SWAC Men's Pod #1 event hosted by Alabama State. The event takes place March 28-29.
