MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Southern University won two of three doubles matches and took three of five completed singles decisions Saturday to defeat Alcorn 4-2 in men's tennis at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pod event hosted by Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama.
Southern (2-12, 1-2 SWAC) seized control early in doubles play, with the brother tandem of Sebastien Byng and Zachery Byng defeating
Vicent Llobell Buigues and
Matthew Holl 6-3 in top-flight action to give the Jaguars an early advantage. Mpho Leshoele and Jaime Sigauque added a 7-5 victory over
Tomas Grime and
Jorge Prats Navarrete in the No. 3 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point for Southern (La.), respectfully.
Alcorn duo
Sebastian Griffiths and
Fabian Juarez provided the lone doubles win for the Braves (3-16, 0-2 SWAC), taking down the Jaguars duo of Lwazi Ngwenya and Gabriel Inyang 6-2 on court two.
In singles competition, Alcorn actually won two of the five completed matches but could not overcome Southern's overall advantage.
Griffiths was dominant at the top of the lineup, defeating Ngwenya 6-2, 6-4, while Buigues was even more impressive for the Purple and Gold on court No. 3, blanking Inyang 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets.
Southern (La.) countered with three singles victories to secure the match.
Sebastien Byng was efficient at the second position, routing Holl 6-1, 6-2, while Leshoele handled Grime 6-1, 6-3 at the fourth spot. Zachery Byng delivered the clinching point at the fifth position, rallying past Navarrete 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in a competitive three-set battle.
The sixth-position match between Juarez and Sigauque was left unfinished at 6-3, 3-6, 4-4 after the team result had been decided.
Alcorn concludes its stint at the SWAC Pod with a matchup against Alabama A&M at 11 a.m.
