MILLBROOK, Ala. – Alabama A&M won four of six singles matches to defeat Alcorn, 4-1, Sunday in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Tennis Pod event hosted by Alabama State. The match took place in Millbrook, Alabama, at The Fields at 17 Springs.
Â
Alabama A&M improved to 6-11 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play, while Alcorn fell to 3-17 on the season and 0-3 in the SWAC.
Â
Alcorn drew first blood in the doubles competition, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to claim a 2-1 edge in doubles – giving the Braves the lone point of the afternoon for the Purple and Gold, respectfully.
Â
Matthew Holl and
Vicent Llobell Buigues delivered the marquee result of the day, outlasting Alabama A&M's team of Arnav Pathange and Agustin Marquez in a tightly contested tiebreak to win 7-6 (8-6) in the top flight doubles spot.
Â
Tomas Grime and
Jorge Prats Navarrete added to the doubles success with a 6-4 victory over Tasso Moreira and Eduardo Andreta in the No. 3 position. Alabama A&M's Yin Chih Lan and Juwan Bae won the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, but the Braves had already done enough to claim the doubles point.
Â
The doubles performance was a genuine bright spot for Alcorn and reflected the team's competitive spirit despite the challenges of a difficult season.
Â
AAMU responded by winning four of the six singles matches to pull away and claim the overall victory.
Â
Yin Chih Lan was effective on court No. 2, dispatching Holl 6-1, 6-4. Bae dominated Grime 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
Â
Meanwhile, Eduardo de Benedictis Andreta defeated Navarrete 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5, and it was the Bulldogs' Goran Krivokapic handling Alcorn's
Fabian Juarez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 to close out the Bulldogs' singles tally.
Â
Two singles matches were left unfinished after the team result had been decided.
Â
At the top of the lineup, the Braves'
Sebastian Griffiths had jumped out to a commanding 6-2 first-set win over Alabama A&M's Pathange and had the match knotted at 5-5 in the second set when play was suspended – a strong individual performance that underscored the quality Griffiths brings to the No. 1 position. And over on court three, Buigues had won the first set 7-5 over Moreira and trailed 4-1 in the second when the match was called.
Â
The Braves wrap up the home portion of the 2026 spring schedule Thursday, April 2, as Alcorn welcomes in-state SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State to Halls Ferry Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
