LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn Baseball honored its seniors Saturday afternoon at McGowan Stadium with a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series finale against Alabama State, with the Braves dropping a 14-10 contest in Lorman, Mississippi. For Alcorn, it was also the final game of the 2026 campaign.
Â
Prior to the game, Alcorn paid thanks to seniors
Rayfield Adams III,
Hunter Bell,
Myles Dews and
Hayden Konkler, along with graduate students
Jaylyn Bennett and
Garrett Oswald.
Â
Alcorn (9-42, 3-25 SWAC) starter
Kanious Davis was chased from the mound after just 2.2 innings, surrendering four earned runs on two hits while walking four. The right-hander, who entered the day at 3-4, absorbed his fifth loss of the season.
Â
Alabama State (30-21, 20-10 SWAC) struggled with Davis early on, but the second time through the lineup proved to be the difference.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the first on a
Jaylyn Bennett RBI double that scored Davis himself, the Hornets erupted for four runs in the third inning. Devin Chandler's two-run double and Miguel Oropeza's RBI double did the damage, and a wild pitch later in the frame pushed the lead to 4-1.
Â
The homestanding Braves battled back with a pair of runs in the home-half of the third.
Â
Bennett, who had a strong afternoon at the plate, ripped a triple to center to score senior
Rayfield Adams III, and then scored himself when Alabama State starter Joe Dolinshek uncorked a balk.
Â
That allowed the Purple and Gold to get within 4-3.
Â
The Hornets tacked on single runs in the fourth and seventh, and then blew the game open with a six-run eighth inning. First baseman Miguel Oropeza, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in the contest, delivered a three-run double down the left-field line that pushed the lead to 12-4. Niguel Jenkins followed with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-4.
Â
Dolinshek earned the win for Alabama State, going 5.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits.
Â
However, the Braves refused to pack it in.
Â
Alcorn scored two in the eighth on RBI singles from
Chance Jackson and Davis, and then mounted a spirited four-run rally in the ninth.
Â
Adrian Vallescorbo, Jackson, and Jamir Hollway all drove in runs during the final frame, with Hollway delivering a two-run single through the right side that made it a 14-9 game. Davis, fittingly, capped the scoring with an RBI single to center that brought the final deficit to four.
Â
It was a classic Davis day despite the rough start on the mound, as he finished 4-for-6 with two RBIs at the plate, proving his power as a two-way player for the Purple and Gold.
Â
Bennett also turned in a standout performance for Alcorn, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two RBIs, and two stolen bases before exiting in the ninth to a standing ovation – similarly to Adams who was substituted in order to receive a standing ovation one last time from the McGowan Stadium crowd.
Â
Jackson chipped in with a 2-for-4 effort that included two RBIs of his own.
Â
For the seniors, it was a bittersweet sendoff at McGowan.
Â
The final score wasn't what anyone on the Alcorn side had hoped for, but the fight shown in the late innings was a reflection of the character that has defined this group throughout their careers in a Braves uniform.
