JACKSON, Miss. –
Kanious Davis supplied Alcorn with two hits Sunday afternoon, while
Keaten Hawk provided the lone run for the Braves as Jackson State claimed the series on the strength of a 14-1 decision in the second game of a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball matchup at Braddy Field in Jackson, Mississippi.
Jayden Lopez was nearly unhittable, and Jackson State made sure he didn't need much help.
Lopez struck out 15 batters over seven complete innings, and the Tigers sent 14 men across the plate in the first three frames to put the game out of reach early-on.
The JSU right-hander was dominant from the first pitch, finishing with a complete-game effort in a run-rule decision while allowing just five hits and one run (unearned). In all, Lopez was rarely in danger.
Alcorn's best threat came in the seventh inning, when
Julian Jarrett and
Kanious Davis singled to put two runners on with one out, but Lopez induced a fielder's choice to end it.
JSU (21-23, 11-12 SWAC) wasted no time jumping out to an insurmountable lead.
The homestanding Tigers sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scored six times, chasing Alcorn starter José Cherena after just the opening frame. Cherena lasted just one inning, allowing six runs on four hits while throwing two wild pitches and surrendering a two-run home run to first baseman Shemar Harris that cleared the left field wall and put JSU ahead 6-0.
Catcher Hederick Torres was the offensive catalyst for Jackson State, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Diego Melendez added three hits, including a double, and drove in three while also scoring three times to boot.
Alcorn (9-36, 3-19 SWAC) looked towards reliever
Hayden Konkler to replace Cherena on the bump to begin the second and fared no better, with the Tigers tacking on four more in the second on five hits to push their lead to 10-0.
Konkler threw 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits.
The third inning saw JSU push four more across home plate, fueled in part by two Alcorn errors charged to the Braves infield, extending the margin to 14-0.
Nicholas Johnson finally slammed the door for the Braves out of the bullpen, tossing 3.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless ball with four strikeouts.
The lone run for the Purple and Gold crossed in the fourth inning.
Right fielder
Keaten Hawk reached on a single and shortstop
Chase Moore followed with a hit that turned into a two-base error by Jackson State right fielder Asafa Jones.
Adrian Vallescorbo, playing behind the dish defensively, on the day for the Braves, then reached on a fielding error by shortstop Melendez, allowing Hawk to score – the only blemish on an otherwise dominant afternoon for the Tigers.
Cherena took the loss, falling to 1-5 on the season.
The series wraps up Monday, May 4, back at Braddy Field with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
