Braves hire new strength & conditioning coach

LORMAN, Miss. – Under the direction of Athletic Director E. D'Wayne Robinson, Alcorn has announced the hiring of Stephen Houston as the Braves new strength and conditioning coach for all 15 varsity sports, with the inclusion of Cheer. The announcement was made official on Tuesday, July 21, with Houston's duties set to begin immediately.

Houston arrived to Alcon from FIU, where he spent just under two years as an assistant strength & conditioning coach for football working alongside Head Coach Willie Simmons. With the Panthers, Houston helped implement strength, speed and conditioning programs for both the offense and defense skills year-round. He instituted a Catapult GPS tracking and monitoring through specially designed sports vests. Additionally, he helped demonstrate proper techniques and modalities to ensure injury reduction for the Panthers.

"Joining Alcorn has been a great experience," said Houston. "I am ready for my family to experience the culture and the atmosphere of the student body – and the game day scene."

Prior to his time at FIU, Houston spent two years at Colorado as an assistant strength & conditioning coach for football under Head Coach Deion Sanders. Similar to his duties with FIU, Houston executed strength, speed and conditioning programs for offensive and defensive lineman, along with specialists. He also served as the assistant intern development coach for the Buffaloes, while assisting in the development of future Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Houston worked from May 2021 through January 2023, serving as assistant strength & conditioning director for football at Purdue. While working with the Boilermakers, he was instrumental in collecting and analyzing Force Plate and GPS data for student-athletes. He would go on to collaborate on speed development programs, while designing and implementing long-term return to play modification programs.

Just before going to West Lafeyette, Indiana, Houston served a year (April 2020-April 2021) at Charleston Southern, serving as the director of strength & conditioning for all Olympic sports for thew Buccaneers. That was in addition to working with the CSU men's and women's basketball programs.

In May 2018, Houston began a 19-month venture with New Mexico as assistant strength & conditioning coach, where he worked with the Lobos Cheer and Football programs, primarily.

"Stephen brings a wealth of experience to Alcorn from a multitude of amazing programs," expressed E. D'Wayne Robinson, Alcorn Athletics Director. "I am certainly happy to have him as a member of our athletic department staff, and I am excited about what he is going to achieve with the Braves. This is a great hire four our program, and the student-athletes are going to love his energy and experience."

Houston is a graduate of Indiana University, earning his bachelor's degree in Recreational Sport Management in December 2013.

His first job out of college was, coincidentally, at his alma mater, serving as assistant strength & conditioning coach for men's basketball with the Hoosiers under Head Coach Tom Crean. With the Hoosiers, he was a member of the staff that claimed the 2015-16 Big 10 regular season championship, where he had players such as OG Anunoby, Thomas Bryant and 2016 Big Ten Conference Sixth Man of the Year – Max Bielfeldt. That same season, the team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While attending Indiana, Houston played two seasons as running back for the Hoosiers, wrapping up a three-year career that including being tied for fourth with 25 rushing touchdowns, sixth with 29 total TDs and ninth with 2,304 rushing yards on Indiana's all-time lists. His nine career 100-yard rushing games at one time sat ninth in IU history. Prior to IU, he attended and played at Independence (Kan.) Community College.

Stephen Houston is married to wife, Ebony, and the couple has three children – Stephen-Michael Deloney-Houston II, Noah-Daniel Deloney-Houston and Saint-Claire Deloney-Houston.
