Jake Morton was named the 15th Head Men’s Basketball Coach in Alcorn State University history on April 23, 2025, officially introduced during a special Meet & Greet at The Watermark in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
A veteran coach with over 20 years of experience at all levels of collegiate basketball, Morton joins the Braves after most recently serving on the coaching staff at Florida State University under legendary Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. His career spans notable conferences such as the ACC, Atlantic Sun, and American Athletic Conference.
Before Florida State, Morton served as an assistant coach at East Carolina and Jacksonville State. At Jacksonville State, he was instrumental in leading the Gamecocks to the 2021–22 Atlantic Sun regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Under his guidance, the program averaged 20 wins per year over a four-season span and twice set new school records for Division I victories.
Morton's coaching journey also includes stops at Miami, Western Kentucky, Coppin State, James Madison, St. Francis (Pa.), and Bowie State. A former standout player at the University of Miami from 1989–1993, Morton scored over 900 points during his collegiate career and was known for his leadership and defensive prowess. He later played professionally in Israel for six years.
Now at the helm of Alcorn State’s men’s basketball program, Morton brings a philosophy rooted in accountability, discipline, and excellence. His vision emphasizes the development of student-athletes as both competitors and scholars, with the goal of building a championship-caliber program that proudly represents the Alcorn legacy.
