GREENVILLE, NC – The Alcorn State University Lady Braves (1-1, 0-0) suffered their first loss of the basketball season to the East Carolina University Pirates (3-0, 0-0).
The Pirates jumped out to a 9-2 lead before the Lady Braves settled down in the first quarter. The Lady Braves were able to keep pace, trimming the lead to 9-6 on a Norriana Haynes jumper.
The rest of the quarter was a seesaw match ending in the Pirates' 26-16 advantage going into the second quarter.
The second quarter defense stiffened a bit for both teams, ending with a 16-9 lead by the Pirates.
The Lady Braves committed 19 turnovers that resulted in 18 points for the Pirates in the first half. The depth came out for the Pirates outscoring the Lady Brave 15 to 4.
In the third quarter, the Pirates were able to put the Lady Braves away by outscoring them 27 to 13. In the third and fourth quarter, the Lady Braves' turnovers continued to plague them, committing 16 additional turnovers in the second half.
The Lady Braves shot 11-26 from the field and 0-8 from beyond the arc.
Haynes led Alcorn with 19 points and six rebounds. Tori span scored in double figures for the second consecutive game with ten points. Jazmine Strane played a team high 32 minutes, scoring six points and seven rebounds in her first start.
The Lady Braves will return to action on November 24
th to face Southland foe, the University of Central Arkansas.
