Lady Braves Prevail over Southern 4-2

LORMAN, Miss. - Sophomore Yaira Guardado netted two goals as the Alcorn State University soccer program recorded a 4-2 victory over Southern University friday night inside Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

This marked the Lady Braves first win since Oct. 11, 2013.

Guardado received a beautiful through ball from senior Viktoriya Mihaylova during the sixth minute and maneuvered a goal around the keeper to give Alcorn (1-3, 1-1 SWAC) an early 1-0 lead.

Guadado then assisted senior Comfort Agyei in the 43rd minute on a high ball into the box that was tapped in for another score.

Guardado connected for another goal in the 62nd minute on a similar play, skillfulyl working around the keeper and finding the back of the net for a 3-0 Lady Braves advantage.

After the Lady Jaguars (1-8, 1-2 SWAC) fought back with two consecutive goals, redshirt freshman Rita Okoro found space and powered a shot into that the Southern goalie thought was a save before the official ruled the ball had crossed the goal line.

Alcorn freshman goalkeeper Giselle Rojas notched five saves.

The Lady Braves return to action Sunday when they host Jackson State in a 1 p.m. tilt.
