Lady Braves Honor Dumas, Jones on Senior Night

LORMAN, Miss. – Monday marked Senior Night for the Alcorn State University volleyball program as it wrapped up its home schedule by dropping 3-0 decisions to Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

The Lady Braves recognized seniors Brittney Dumas and Lurlethia Jones during the 10-minute intermission of the ASU match.

Freshman Octavia Dixon scored 13 kills with three assists to lead Alcorn in the two matches. Freshman Majesty Ferguson contributed 28 assists and freshmen Fiapaipai Iosia and Damyani Collier each served a pair of aces. On defense, Dixon and Iosia both finished with nine digs and freshman Omone Davies followed with seven.

Alabama A&M | L, 0-3 (16-25, 17-25, 13-25)

The Lady Bulldogs (12-17, 12-3 SWAC) used a 5-0 run early in set one to pull away and claim the first match point. The visitors jumped out to an 11-1 lead in set two and led 23-12 late before Alcorn earned four straight points. The teams then traded points to close out the set. The Lady Braves were in control 4-1 early in the final set, but the Lady Bulldogs used a 7-1 swing and never looked back.  

Dixon totaled seven kills with two assists and six digs. Ferguson chipped in 18 assists and Davies and freshman Joeli Warren-Smith recorded block assists.

Alabama State | L, 0-3 (10-25, 8-25, 18-25)

Monday against the Lady Hornets (23-9, 16-0 SWAC), Dixon posted a team-high six kills and Ferguson totaled 10 assists. Four Lady Braves made block assists and Davies had six digs.

Sets one and two were all ASU, but the teams were neck-and-neck in set three. With the score knotted at 12-12, the guests pulled away with a 6-1 run. A pair of kills and a Singryd Valadares ace got the Lady Braves to within 20-17, but ASU was able to close out the set to earn the win.

The Lady Braves are at Jackson State this Thursday as they play the Lady Tigers in a 6:30 p.m. conference match at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
