Volleyball Comes Up Short At Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – After a hard-fought opening set that featured multiple lead changes, Jackson State controlled sets two and three as the Alcorn State University volleyball team fell in straight sets Thursday night at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.

Junior Singryd Valadares scored nine kills to lead the Lady Braves. Freshman Majesty Ferguson followed with four kills and 12 assists. Freshman Octavia Dixon and Fiapaipai Iosia each served a pair of aces. Freshman Alicia Johnson had a big night with a season-high four blocks and Iosia added six digs.

The Lady Braves took an early 4-2 lead in the opening set, but the Lady Tigers (7-23, 6-9 SWAC) knotted the score at 4-4. Alcorn then scored four-straight points, but the hosts responded with eight unanswered. The team stormed back and was within a couple points of earning the match point, but JSU posted three consecutive points to claim the early match lead.

JSU pulled out to an 18-6 lead in the following set and used a 9-1 run in the final set to earn the victory.

Alcorn concludes the regular season next Monday, Nov. 6 in Itta Bena, Miss. as the team plays a 7 p.m. conference match at Mississippi Valley State.
