Lady Braves Conclude Shocker Winter Classic with Loss to WSU

WICHITA, Kan. – Going up against stiff competition for the second straight night, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program dropped an 87-46 decision to Wichita State to wrap up the Shocker Winter Classic Saturday at Charles Koch Arena.

Senior guard Alexus Freeman totaled 18 points to pace the Lady Braves in the loss. Junior guard Kristian Dewitt finished with 10 points and redshirt-sophomore guard Brianna Tolliver chipped in eight points.

Freeman shot 6-20 (30.0 percent) from the floor, 4-8 (50.0 percent) from long-range, and converted both of her free throws. The Navasota, Texas native grabbed four rebounds with a pair of assists and a team-high four steals.

The Shockers (4-8) scored back-to-back layups to open the game, but Alcorn would knot the score at 6-6 on a Freeman deep ball (7:57 in the 1st). After a 7-0 run by the hosts, sophomore guard Jada Hargrove made both of her charity attempts to trim the WSU lead to 13-8. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Lady Braves would get. Wichita scored 10 unanswered to end the opening quarter and outscored Alcorn 16-12 in the second to take a 39-20 lead at the break.

The third quarter proved more competitive as the Lady Braves netted 19 points, but WSU held Alcorn to just seven points in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The team shot just 3-22 (13.6 percent), including 1-9 (11.1 percent) from deep, and did not get to the charity stripe.

Alcorn went 16-63 (25.4 percent) from the field, 6-28 (21.4 percent) from beyond the arc, and 8-14 (57.1 percent) at the line.

WSU dominated the specialty stats as the Shockers scored more points in the paint (56-18), more points off turnovers (22-11), more second-chance points (15-4), and more bench points (31-18). The hosts also controlled the glass (44-28). The Lady Braves had more fast-break points, 6-2.

The game featured one tie and no lead changes.

Alcorn has a couple of days off before the team travels to Lafayetta, La. Wednesday for an 11 a.m. game at UL-Lafayette.
