BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball team limited Southern to just 45 points, the second lowest by an opponent this season, but was only able to manage 33 points of its own Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The Lady Braves (9-18, 9-7 SWAC) locked down the Lady Jags (13-11, 11-5 SWAC) to the tune of 34.4 percent from the field and just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Junior
Alexus Freeman tallied a team-high nine points while fellow junior
Miracle Rushing grabbed nine boards. The two were very close to recording double-doubles as Freeman secured seven rebounds and Rushing totaled seven points.
Senior
Henrietta Wells blocked five shots.
The first quarter slipped away from Alcorn after a two-point tie turned into a nine-point margin at 12-3. Three straight layups, one each by Freeman, junior
Gabrielle Jubinville and freshman
Aysha Kirkland, cut into the deficit at 12-9.
Southern's lead ballooned to 12 at the half and the Lady Braves were unable to recover. Alcorn smothered the Lady Jags defensively into just 17 second-half points but only scored 17 of its own.
The Lady Braves forced 20 turnovers, marking the 11
th time in league play with 20-plus takeaways. Alcorn outscored the opposition 14-10 in second-chance points and 13-8 in points off turnovers.
The Lady Braves played their second straight game without junior guard
Tia Sanders, who is sidelined due to injury.
Alcorn travels to face Texas Southern Thursday and Prairie View A&M Saturday in their final two games before the SWAC Tournament.
