Alexus Freeman were three rebounds short of a double-double as the Alcorn State University women's basketball program dropped a 64-45 decision to Texas Southern University Thursday evening at the H&PE Arena.
After senior guard
Brianna Luton commenced the game with a layup, TSU (19-9, 13-4 SWAC) scored the next 11 points en route to a 19-8 first quarter.
Alcorn (9-19, 9-8 SWAC) held the Lady Tigers scoreless for a period of 4:32 between the first two quarters, tallying six points in the process to cut the deficit to seven at 19-12.
The Lady Braves outscored TSU 12-11 in the second quarter despite trailing 30-20 at the half.
Three straight layups from Junior
Miracle Rushing, Freeman and Wells brought Alcorn within four at 30-26. The Lady Tigers, however, then went on a 12-0 run with six being scored by the SWAC's second-highest scorer, Joyce Kennerson.
The Lady Braves made an 8-point run of their own near the end of the third quarter to come within eight. After junior
Gabrielle Jubinville's jumper got Alcorn within nine at 47-38 with 9:41 to play, TSU scored and kept its double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Lady Braves outscored the Lady Tigers 15-14 in bench points and 6-2 in fast-break points. Wells totaled three blocks, marking her 21
st multiple-block performance of the season. Alcorn was 6-for-7 (.857) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Braves face Prairie View A&M Saturday at 3 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
