LORMAN, Miss. - Three different Lady Braves found the back of the net as the Alcorn State University women's soccer program secured its first SWAC win of the season with a 3-1 final against Alabama A&M (0-9, 0-2) Sunday afternoon at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

The win marks the first for Alcorn in the all-time series.

"We stressed the importance of starting strongly in today's game," said head coach Junior Noel. "It was important that we jumped on the opposition early and then we could coast. The objective has been to get everyone involved and once you have a team where everyone is contributing, it helps us get better and grow."

Redshirt-sophomore Rita Okoro led the offense with 6-of-11 shots on goal. Junior Yaira Guardado followed with 4-of-6 shots on target, junior Vanessa Monge put 2-of-3 on frame, and redshirt-senior Viktoriya Mihaylova had 1-of-3 on goal. Kameran Proby earned her second career victory as the freshman goalkeeper registered a pair of saves in a complete-game effort.

Alcorn (2-3, 1-1) opened up the scoring in the 10th minute as Okoro and freshman Mireya Gonzalez both pressed up on a ball deep in A&M territory. The pressure allowed Gonzalez to dispossess the A&M defender and the Burbank, Calif. set up Okoro for the goal.

Guardado added to the tally five minutes later as she finished off senior Alexandra Salvador's corner kick that found the middle of the penalty box. Mihaylova then made it 3-0 in the 21st minute on a converted penalty kick.

Alabama A&M got on the board in the 56th minute as Ayanna Gooden drove the ball down the left side. The freshman forward beat her defender and found the back right of the net for A&M's lone goal.

The Lady Braves held the advantage in shots (27-5), shots on goal (16-3), corner kicks (6-2), and committed fewer fouls (5-3).

Alcorn opens up a five-game road swing next Sunday, Oct. 1 as the Lady Braves square off with Howard in a noon contest in Birmingham, Ala.

"We're going to continue to be who we are," added Noel. "With all of these games we've played at home, I believe that the girls have enough confidence now that they can step out and represent Alcorn the way this program needs to be represented. We just have to keep our level heads and I believe strongly that we can compete with anyone in the SWAC."
