LORMAN, Miss. – Southern broke a deadlocked game by scoring two goals in the final 17 minutes to grab a 3-1 decision over the Alcorn State University soccer program Friday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
 
Alcorn (0-11, 0-6 SWAC) had its opportunities to go ahead, but hit the crossbar four times in the match.
 
The Lady Braves trailed 1-0 in the 44th minute when they knotted it up on their first goal of conference play. Senior Yaira Guardado got the play started with a through-ball to sophomore Mireya Gonzalez who took a few dribbles and fired it past a charging goalkeeper to make it 1-1 at half.
 
Alcorn had a few chances early in the second half, but Southern (3-8-1, 2-4-1 SWAC) was able to keep the Lady Braves off the scoreboard. The Jaguars took control with a pair of goals by Lauryn McKinney in the 74th and 79th minute, respectively.
 
The Lady Braves registered conference-highs of 18 shots and 10 shots on goal. Gonzalez tallied seven shots with four on target, while Guardado pulled the trigger on four with three on goal. Also recording shots for the Lady Braves were junior Maya McInnis, freshman Johanna Seelhorst and junior Vanessa Monge.
 
Alcorn's starters played nearly the entire match as the team logged just 14 bench minutes. Junior Giselle Rojas played the full 90 in net and made nine saves.
 
It marked Southern's first victory over Alcorn since 2015.
 
The Lady Braves will remain at home Sunday when they host Jackson State at 1 p.m.
