Braves Fall to Redhawks in Series Opener

BELLEVUE, Wash. – After a scoreless first two-and-a-half innings, Seattle University scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third as the Alcorn State University baseball program fell 13-0 Friday afternoon in the series opener at Bannerwood Park.

The Braves (8-25) were held to just two hits in the contest as Wallace Rios Jimenez and Jordan McGowan each went 1-for-3 at the plate. Defensively, Brandon Barna earned nine putouts and Kyle Jenkins had four with an assist.

Carlos Lopez (2-2) threw 2.0 innings and allowed 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk to take the loss. The junior faced 19 batters and recorded three strikeouts. Zachary Perez pitched the other 4.0 innings and was tagged for three runs (one earned) on five hits and a pair of bases on balls. The Houston, Texas native retired two of the 19 Redhawks (21-10) he faced.

Seattle had a big bottom half of the third as the hosts plated 10 runs on six hits and three errors. The Red and White then added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the final tally. Alcorn got a runner on second in the top of the fourth as Rios Jimenez reached on a leadoff single to center and advanced on a ground out. Seattle would sit the next two Braves down though to get out of the inning.

McGowan was able to get to second in Alcorn's next time up. The sophomore hit a two-out single up the middle and Barna worked a full count to put two on, but the Redhawks got A.J. Makarewicz swinging.

The teams will return for Game Two in the series at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
