LORMAN, Miss. – Senior Yaira Guardado scored in the fifth minute, but Mississippi University for Women scored twice as the Alcorn State University women's soccer program dropped its home opener 2-1 Sunday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

Guardado led the Lady Braves (0-2) on offense with five shots, placing two on target. Freshman Johanna Seelhorst followed with four shots, while sophomore Mireya Gonzalez and junior Anjelica Dugan each took three. Sophomore Kameran Proby made seven saves in a complete-game effort in goal.

Alcorn took an early lead as Guardado put away a ball that rebounded off an Owl (0-1) defender. With just the keeper to beat, the San Diego native ripped a shot that hit off the left post and spun into the net. The visitors would respond, however, as MUW's Caroline Grafe scored the equalizer in the 30th minute.

In the second half, the Owls continued to test Alcorn's defense and Proby. MUW would finally find a chink though as Mary Catherine Hutch found Grafe for the lead and what would be the game-winner in the 65th minute.

The Lady Braves recorded more saves (7-6), but the Owls took more shots (18-17) and won more corner kicks (4-2). Both teams committed six fouls.

Alcorn is on the road next weekend as they play a 1 p.m. game at Nicholls State on Sunday.
