THIBODAUX, La. – The Alcorn State University soccer program could not withstand a strong Nicholls State attack as the Purple and Gold fell 6-0 Sunday afternoon at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.

Senior Yaira Guardado placed 2-of-3 shot on frame to pace the Lady Braves (0-3) on offense. Freshman Johanna Seelhorst and junior Anjelica Jacobs also took one shot each. Sophomore keeper Kameran Proby tied her career high with 12 saves. The McDonough, Ga. product faced 37 shots with a .667 save percentage in the complete-game effort.

The Colonels (2-4) opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Proby was able to save a Kristyn Daniels shot, but Kristy Helmers was there to put away the rebound. Nicholls then made it a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute as Alison Ward played a through ball to Francesca Curteis, who just had Proby to beat. Alcorn had a couple looks at goal later in the half but couldn't crack Nicholls keeper Roosa Hurmerinta.

Nicholls continued to press early in the second, doubling its lead with a pair of goals in just over a minute of play. The home team made it 5-0 in the 74th minute after stealing the ball and chipping it in for the score. Six minutes later, the Colonels benefitted from an Alcorn own goal for the final tally.

The Lady Braves registered more saves (12-2) and committed fewer fouls (1-8).

Alcorn begins a three-game home stretch this Friday against Louisiana Tech to wrap up non-conference play. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. opening kick.
