Fast Start Not Enough for Lady Braves against LSU-Alexandria

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University soccer program came out of the gates hot and scored the first two goals of the match, but LSU-Alexandria responded with four unanswered to grab a 4-2 decision on a humid Friday afternoon at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

The Lady Braves (0-4) struck first in the 19th minute on a set pieces play. Senior Yaira Guardado launched a ball into the center of the box which was finished off by freshman Johanna Seelhorst for her first goal of the year.

Alcorn added another to go up 2-0 in the 31st minute after Guardado floated a lofting shot from about 25 yards out that went over the goalkeeper's head. It was her second goal of the year.

The Generals (1-2-1) got back in it late in the first half on a goal by Fallon Roussell in the 42nd minute. It came on a high shot that tipped off the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.

The Lady Braves carried a 2-1 edge into the half.

LSUA evened it in the 64th minute on a free kick. The ball landed in the center of the box and was eventually scored by Jaslyn Gregory off a deflection. The Generals scored the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute, and an insurance tally in the 76th.

Guardado led the Lady Braves with three shots, all on target. Junior Anjelica Dugan and sophomore Mireya Gonzalez each fired a pair of shots.

Defensively, junior Maya McInnis and freshman Shalisha King both played 90 minutes. Freshman midfielder Paula Cabeza also played the full 90.

Junior goalkeeper Giselle Rojas made her second start of the year and blocked nine saves.

It was Alcorn's first-ever meeting with LSUA.

The Lady Braves will close out non-conference play Sunday at home when they host North Dakota at 2 p.m.
