Alcorn Falls In Straight Sets To Jackson State

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program saw a raucous crowd file into E. E. Simmons Gymnasium on Thursday night but played from behind most of the match as the Lady Tigers swept the Lady Braves.

The Lady Braves (3-15, 1-7 SWAC) got season-best outings from both junior Daharri Thompkins and redshirt senior Singryd Valadares as they had five and four blocks, respectively. Junior Mae Lewis contributed a season-high three digs as well.

Valadares led the purple and gold with eight kills along with a .364 hitting percentage, junior Jasmine Chambers averaged 4.7 assists per set (14 total) and recorded the team's lone service ace while sophomore Mariah Wilmoth topped Alcorn with five digs on the night.

Jackson State | L, 0-3 (18-25, 13-25, 17-25)

Chambers opened up the contest with a service ace, much to the delight of the homecoming crowd. After the score became tied at three, JSU used an 8-1 run to silence the home crowd and make it 11-4. Jackson State's lead would balloon to as much as nine as the blue and gray won the first set going away (18-25).

Jackson State came out in the second set with a bang, roaring out to a 10-3 lead in the first 13 points. Alcorn would answer with three consecutive points to cut the deficit to four, but that would be the closest the Lady Braves would get as JSU reeled off 13 of the next 17 points to take a commanding two-set edge (13-25).

The purple and gold fed off the fired up Alcornites to begin the third set, starting it off with five of the first six points. The resilient Lady Tigers would claw its way back however to take a 10-9 upper-hand. Coach Robinson's bunch seemed to seize momentum immediately afterwards, ripping five straight points to move ahead by a score of 14-10. Jackson State came back with a vengeance, exploding for nine points in a row and completed the sweep with a 15-3 final run to drop Alcorn to 3-15 on the campaign (17-25).

Alcorn will bring the Homecoming festivities to a close on Monday night when it faces the Delta Devilettes at 6 p.m. inside the Davey Whitney Complex.
