Alcorn Swept In Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program dropped both contests in straight sets to the Hornets and Bulldogs in its first SWAC East road swing.

The Lady Braves (3-14, 1-6 SWAC) saw sophomore Sydney Joseph tally her fifth double-digit kill outing against AAMU (10) while topping the team with 17 kills overall in the two matches. Junior Jasmine Chambers averaged 5.7 assists per set (34 total) and sophomore Mariah Wilmoth posted 23 digs (3.8 per set).

Alabama State | L, 0-3 (12-25, 16-25, 15-25)

Alcorn came out the gates in the first set with a 3-0 advantage but a 6-1 Hornet rally gave the home side a 6-4 edge. The Lady Braves could not recover as ASU ran away with the set, outscoring the purple and gold 19-8 while scoring seven of the set's last eight points (12-25).

The second set started off strong for the Hornets at 6-2 but Alcorn roared back to knot the score at six. After Coach Robinson's crew took an 11-10 upper-hand, Alabama State exploded with a 10-1 outburst that effectively ended the set and gave ASU a two-set edge (16-25).

The purple and gold kept the third set trailing by four through 24 points (10-14) but that would be the closest they would get for the rest of the night as ASU took the third match to clinch the sweep (15-25).

Freshman Jéda Curry and Sydney Joseph shared the team lead with seven kills, Jasmine Chambers had 12 assists (4.0 per set) and Mariah Wilmoth was the squad's top defender at nine digs.

Curry was efficient in her attacks as she hit .375 on 16 attempts with only one error.

Alabama A&M | L, 0-3 (19-25, 19-25, 11-25)

Both clubs traded three-point runs to open the match and then each side scored ten over the next 20 points to tie the score at 13. Alabama A&M took over from there with 5-0 barrage to take a lead it would not relinquish to take the first set (19-25).

The second set saw the Lady Braves begin on fire, jumping out to an early 10-6 cushion. A 7-3 Bulldog run halted the momentum with both teams deadlocked at 13. A similar 7-2 rally followed for AAMU which allowed the maroon clad home squad claimed the second set (19-25).

The third set was all Alabama A&M as the Bulldogs went ahead 16-10 before unleashing the final dagger; an 8-0 onslaught which culminated in the AAMU sweep (11-25).

Two Lady Braves set new career-highs as Joseph smacked three service aces and Wilmoth recorded 14 digs. Chambers notched a new season-best with four kills to go along with 22 assists (7.3 per set) and 10 digs, her third double-double of 2019.

Junior Daharri Thompkins was great on the attack, hitting .556 with five kills on nine attempts.

The Lady Braves return home to face Jackson State on Thursday inside E. E. Simmons Gym to kick off the string of Homecoming athletic events.
