LORMAN, Miss. – Six student-athletes scored in double-figures for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program in a 122-71 victory over Ecclesia on Friday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Braves (4-6) who never trailed in the contest. They extended their home winning-streak to six games, and have won 10 of their last 11 at the Whitney Complex.
The 122 points were the most scored in a game by Alcorn since 1984-85 when it defeated Dillard 136-91.
Senior
Maurice Howard registered a season-high 24 points, the most by a Brave in a single-game this season. He was 6-for-9 from three-point range and also recorded four steals and three assists in 23 minutes.
A career-high came from junior
Arne Morris as he finished with 16 points. He had the hot-hand and was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond-the-arc.
Senior
Deshaw Andrews turned in a big night with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior
Corey Tillery submitted 17 points and six rebounds.
Nearing a double-double was junior
Anthony Fairley with 10 points and nine rebounds. At center, senior
Alonzo Campbell got the start and ended with 10 points and four rebounds.
As a team, the Braves were knocking down shots from all over the place as they shot .557 (44-79) from the field and .605 (23-38) from three. They also held a large rebounding edge of 49-23.
Ecclessia was led by Drew Cone's 25 points and Deondre Phillips' 19 points.
Alcorn scored the first five points of the game on a three by junior
Troymain Crosby and a fast-break lay-up by Howard. A lay-up by Campbell and a three by Andrews extended it to 19-6 at the 15:54 mark.
The Braves were ahead 33-16 with 8:47 left after a put-back lay-up by Tillery. A three by Andrews made it a 45-21 game with 5:39 to go. Alcorn took a 60-33 advantage into the intermission after freshman
Dominic Brewton drilled a three on its final possession.
The Braves scored the first six points of the second half on threes by Crosby and Tillery to go up 66-33. A lay-up by Morris changed the score to 87-46 with 12:35 remaining. The largest lead of the night was 54 points, 122-68, on a late three by Howard.
Alcorn will conclude conference play on Sunday, Dec. 29 with a trip to Santa Clara at noon (CT). Conference action begins Saturday, Jan. 4 against Prairie View A&M at 5:30 p.m. on the road.
NOTES
- Alcorn has outscored the opposition 433-248 in four home games this year. It's an average score of 108-62.
- The Braves improved to 146-6 all-time when they score at least 100 points in a game. They did it for the third time this season.
- Alcorn is now 17-0 against non-Division I opponents under head coach
Montez Robinson.
- The Braves came into the night leading the SWAC in three-pointers made per game (8.9) and drilled 23.
- Alcorn has outscored the opposition 399-340 in the second half this year.
- Howard submitted his 10th career 20-plus scoring game. It was also his 50th career double-digit scoring night and sixth in a row. He's up to 1,091 career points, which is 37th all-time in school history.
- Andrews netted his 19th career double-figure scoring game and seventh this year. He was 4-of-6 from beyond-the-arc. His 18 points were the second-most he's scored this year, after a 20-point outing against Our Lady of the Lake.
- Tillery stayed hot with 17 points. He was coming off a 21-point outing at Tulane on Monday. He scored in double-figures for the seventh time this year.
- Morris more-than doubled his previous career-best with 16 points. His previous high was seven versus Our Lady of the Lake. Morris was 5-for-6 from the field.
- Fairley's 10 points and nine rebounds were both career-bests. His previous highs were eight points and five rebounds. It was his first career double-figure scoring game.
- Campbell posted his fourth career double-figure scoring game and second this season. He's scored at least 10 points in two of the last three games.
- Friday marked the first-ever meeting between Alcorn and Ecclesia.
