Braves Take the Court Monday against Rust at Home

– After taking time off for Thanksgiving and then final exams, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will be back in action Monday when it hosts Rust College at 6 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
It's Alcorn's (2-5) first game since Nov. 27 when it dropped a 67-50 decision at Little Rock. The Braves led by 11 in the first half, and junior Troymain Crosby finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Braves are on a four-game home winning-streak, which carried over from last season. Alcorn has won eight of its last nine home games.
 
Crosby, a Preseason All-Conference Second-Team selection, averages a team-high 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He's one of four double-figure scorers on Alcorn along with seniors Maurice Howard, Deshaw Andrews and Corey Tillery.
 
Howard, a Preseason All-Conference First-Team honoree, averages 11.4 points per game. He ranks second in the conference in both three-point percentage (.342) and and threes made per game (2.6). Howard ranks seventh in school history in assists (247) and 39th in scoring (1,030 points).
 
Andrews scores 11.7 points per game and is second in the conference in free throw percentage with a .864 mark. In Alcorn's last home game, Andrews registered 20 points and eight rebounds against Our Lady of the Lake.
 
Alcorn's leading rebounder is junior Kobe Wilson. He ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding with 7.1 per game. He registered his first career double-double with career-highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds against Paul Quinn.
 
The Braves have been a second half team this year. They've outscored the opposition 252-246 in the second half.
 
Rust is an NAIA member and plays in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Alcorn will be its first Division I opponent of the year. Jordan Jackson averages 19.5 points per game and scored 35 against Texas College and 30 against Martin Methodist.
 
NOTES
- Alcorn is 5-0 all-time against Rust. The two teams will meet for the fourth consecutive year. Last season, the Braves won 103-66 as Howard poured in 26 points, and Crosby drained 22.
 
- Alcorn is 15-0 against non-Division I opponents under head coach Montez Robinson.
 
- The Braves rank first in the SWAC in steals (10.3 spg), three-pointers made per game (8.7) and three-point percentage defense (.289)
 
- Senior Devon Brewer has turned away 71 career blocks, and is attempting to become just the ninth player in school history to reach the 80-block plateau. He swatted away three blocks in Alcorn's last game at Little Rock.
 
- In Alcorn's home-opener, the team posted a lopsided 111-59 win over Paul Quinn. The 111 points were the most scored by Alcorn in 21 seasons. The Braves improved to 144-6 all-time when they score at least 100 points in a game. The Braves have won seven of their last eight home openers.
 
- The Braves are in the midst of another loaded non-conference schedule. It includes trips to DePaul, UL-Monroe, Memphis, N.C. State, Little Rock, Tulane and Santa Clara.
