Lady Braves Drop Both Matches To Colonels

THIBODAUX, La. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program was swept in a two-day doubleheader with Nicholls this weekend as it partook in the Colonel Classic at Stopher Gym.

The Lady Braves (2-2) were led offensively by sophomore Sydney Joseph who had nine kills and an ace while the defense was paced by the consistent junior Fiapaipai Iosia with 4.2 digs per set and 25 total.

Nicholls (Game 1) | L, 0-3 (12-25, 14-25, 16-25)

The first set saw the Lady Braves and Colonels stand even at four before Nicholls took control. Alcorn could only muster one point at a time while Nicholls had multiple runs of two, three and four to put the set away (12-25).

The second set saw the visitors from Lorman stake its first lead with a kill by Joseph and an attack error by Nicholls' Jackie Alanis. The red and gray responded with authority, rattling off nine straight points that put the Lady Braves in a hole that they would not recover from and gave the Colonels a two-set advantage (14-25).

The third set looked similar to the first two as Nicholls clung to a 12-8 lead through 20 points. Coach Robinson's crew was not going to go down without a fight, catching fire to the tune of a 6-1 rally to pull ahead at 14-13. The home team grinded that momentum to a screeching halt, outscoring the Lady Braves 12-2 over the final stretch to come away with a sweep (16-25).

Joseph and Barren each topped the team with five kills on the night, Iosia logged her third straight match with double-digit digs (13) and Chambers averaged 4.6 assists per set with the club's lone service ace.

Nicholls (Game 2) | L, 0-3 (12-25, 20-25, 9-25)

In the second match of the two-day doubleheader, Nicholls controlled the match from the opening serve, using runs of 8-2 and 8-0 to race past the Lady Braves (12-25).

Set number two saw the Colonels well on their way to clinching another set as they held a 20-16 upper-hand but Alcorn roared back to knot the score at 20. That would be the final points of the set for the purple and gold as Nicholls finished the deal with a 5-0 rally to go up by two sets (20-25).

The third set was all about the home squad as the red and gray built a steady lead and kept the Lady Braves out of reach to clinch the match in straight sets (9-25).

Thompkins and Joseph paced Alcorn with four kills, Iosia recorded a double-digit dig outing (12) for the fourth consecutive match and junior Jasmine Youngthunder claimed the most assists with six.

The purple and gold return to the court on Tuesday, September 10 when the Lady Braves head to Mobile to face the South Alabama Jaguars at 6:30 p.m.
