Braves Play First Home SWAC Games against JSU, GSU

LORMAN, Miss. – As long-time public address announcer Emanuel Barnes will say Saturday, "It's SWAC Time Baby" when the Alcorn State University men's basketball program hosts Jackson State at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. contest Monday against Grambling State at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
Alcorn (5-8, 1-1 SWAC) will look to continue its winning ways at home. The Braves are on a six-game home winning-streak, which carried over from last season. Alcorn has outscored the opposition 433-248 in four home games this year. It's an average score of 108-62. The program has won 10 of its last 11 home games.
 
The Braves proved they could get it done on the road too as they're coming off a big 95-80 victory at Texas Southern in their last outing. The Braves shot .607 (17-28) from 3FG and .923 (24-26) from the free throw line. Senior Maurice Howard netted a career-high 31 points, while senior Corey Tillery tallied a career-high 26 points. Howard was 14-for-15 from the free throw line.
 
Alcorn has four student-athletes averaging in double-figures. All four shoot over 36 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line.
 
At the top of the stat sheet is senior Maurice Howard with 16.1 points per game. Howard ranks sixth all-time in school history in assists (264) and 31st in scoring (1,150 points). He's made more threes than anyone in school history with 246.
 
This year, Howard ranks first in the SWAC in both three-point percentage (.415) and three-pointers made per game (3.1).
 
Tillery scores 13.5 points per outing and shoots .367 from three-point range and .870 from the free throw line. He's made at least five three-points in three different games, including an 8-for-11 mark at Texas Southern.
 
Senior Deshaw Andrews puts in 11.8 points per game. The forward is shooting .471 (24-51) from long-range and leads the league in free throw percentage with a .902 (37-41).
 
Junior Troymain Crosby, a Preseason All-Conference Second-Team honoree, is the fourth double-figure scorer with 11.4 points per game. He's shooting .448 (13-29) from three and .833 (35-42) from the free throw line.
 
Alcorn's leading rebounder is junior Kobe Wilson with 6.1 rebounds per outing. He pulled down 10 rebounds at Prairie View A&M, and seven at Texas Southern.
 
In order to have success against JSU (4-11, 1-1 SWAC), the Braves will have to stop Tristan Jarrett. He leads the league in scoring with 20.0 points per game, including 31 points against Alabama State. The Tigers defeated the Hornets 70-67 before falling to Alabama A&M 66-57.
 
GSU (8-7, 2-0 SWAC) is off to a strong start in conference after beating AAMU 70-60 and ASU 68-63. The team also has non-conference wins over Southeastern Louisiana 81-70 and Louisiana-Monroe 66-61. DeVante Jackson averages a team-high 13.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

NOTES
- Alcorn and Jackson State are tied 58-58 all-time against each other. Alcorn is 4-4 against JSU under head coach Montez Robinson. The two teams split the season series last year, each winning at home.
 
- The Braves are 71-42 all-time against Grambling State.
 
- With a win Saturday, Alcorn would start 2-1 in conference for the first time since 2012-13.
 
- The Braves rank top-10 in the nation in threes made per game (10.4). Alcorn also leads the SWAC in scoring (77.5 ppg), free throw percentage (.750), steals (9.3 spg) and three-point percentage (.389).
 
- Alcorn has been a second half team this year. It's outscored the opposition 520-468 in the second half.
 
- Robinson is in his fifth season at the helm. He carries a 40-34 SWAC record.
 
- Senior Devon Brewer has turned away 72 career blocks, and is attempting to become just the ninth player in school history to reach the 80-block plateau.
 
- In Alcorn's last home game, the Braves notched a 122-71 win over Ecclesia. Six student-athletes scored in double-figures as Alcorn posted its highest scoring total since 1984-85. Junior Arne Morris netted a career-high 16 points and was 4-for-4 from beyond-the-arc.
