Braves Look to Carry Momentum into MVSU, UAPB

Coming off a big home victory, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will look to get it done on the road when it travels to Mississippi Valley State for a 4 p.m. tip Saturday at the R.W. Harrison Complex, followed by a 7:30 p.m. game Monday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
 
The Braves (6-9. 2-2 SWAC) handed Grambling State its first conference loss of the year this past Monday in an 87-69 decision. Alcorn never trailed and shot 13-for-31 (.419) from three. Senior Maurice Howard tallied a game-high 24 points and eight assists. The Braves led by double-figures for most of the second half.
 
Alcorn has four student-athletes averaging in double-figures. All four shoot over 37 percent from three-point range and 79 percent from the free throw line.
 
At the top of the stat sheet is Howard, a Preseason All-Conference First-Team selection with 16.7 points per game and 22.0 in conference. Howard ranks fifth all-time in school history in assists (276) and 31st in scoring (1,190 points). He's made more threes than anyone in school history with 254.
 
This year, Howard ranks first in the SWAC in both three-point percentage (.438) and three-pointers made per game (3.2).
 
Senior Corey Tillery scores 13.1 points per outing and shoots .371 from three-point range and .870 from the free throw line. He's made at least five three-points in three different games, including an 8-for-11 mark at Texas Southern.
 
Junior Troymain Crosby, a Preseason All-Conference Second-Team honoree, averages 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He's coming off a big weekend which included a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds against Jackson State. Crosby ranks third in the SWAC in free throw percentage (.797) and top-five in steals (1.5 spg).
 
Senior Deshaw Andrews is Alcorn's fourth double-figure scorer with 11.7 points per game. He's shooting .452 (28-62) from three and a league-leading .894 (42-47) from the free throw line.
 
Alcorn's leading rebounder is junior Kobe Wilson with 6.0 rebounds per outing. He ranks top-five in the conference in offensive rebounding with 2.1 per game. Wilson has secured at least 10 rebounds in three games this year.
 
MVSU (1-14, 1-2 SWAC) is coming off its first win of the season after beating Alabama A&M 72-66 on the road. Michael Green leads the team and ranks second in the league in scoring with 16.9 points per game.
 
UAPB (3-12, 2-1 SWAC) is also coming off a road win after taking down Alabama State 61-56. The Golden Lions opened conference play with an 80-76 win against the Delta Devils in Itta Bena. In three conference games, Markedric Bell averages 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

NOTES
- The Braves rank top-10 in the nation in threes made per game (10.3). Alcorn also leads the SWAC in scoring (77.3 ppg), three-point percentage (.388), free throw percentage (.737), assists (14.5 apg), steals (9.3 spg) and offensive rebounding (12.3 orpg).
 
- Alcorn is 68-38 all-time against MVSU and 7-3 under head coach Montez Robinson.
 
- The Braves are 42-24 all-time against UAPB and 6-2 under Robinson.
 
- Robinson is in his fifth season at the helm. He carries a 41-35 SWAC record.
 
- Alcorn has been a second half team this year. It's outscored the opposition 607-549 in the second half.
 
- The Braves have outrebounded all four of their opponents in conference.
 
- In Alcorn's last road game, the Braves posted a big 95-80 victory at Texas Southern. The Braves shot .607 (17-28) from three and .923 (24-26) from the free throw line. Howard netted a career-high 31 points, while Tillery tallied a career-high 26 points. Howard was 14-for-15 from the free throw line.
