BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Alcorn State University men's and women's track programs travel to Birmingham to compete in the KMS Open at the Birmingham Crossplex this Sunday. Second-year head coach Jimmy Joseph has been impressed with the team's work over the past two weeks.
"Our staff is excited for our kids to get back into competition. We've been off for two weeks and had time to polish a few things off," stated coach Joseph.
Senior Bralon Robinson looks to improve his marks in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash with the SWAC Championships less than a month away. Robinson has the fourth fastest 60-meter dash and second faster 200-meter dash time in the conference. Bralon trails his cousin and teammate Freshman Arrington Robinson currently leading the conference in the 200-meter dash.
Freshman Christian Franklin plans to continue his impressive rookie season. Franklin set the school record in the mile at the Blazer Invitational. Christian will team with Elijah Anderson, Charles Nnathah Jr., and Peterson Saint-Cyrin to run what should be a competitive men's distance medley relay. Franklin and Nnathah Jr. return to action later in the meet slotted to run the 5000-meter and 60-meter hurdles respectively.
On the women's side, the jumpers reign supreme. The Lady Braves currently have three women ranked in the top-six in the SWAC. Sophomores Qua'Neshia Hamilton and Khiah Williams return to the runway to further cement their status as one of the best jump groups in the conference. Williams will look to improve in the 60m dash where she is ranked fifth in the conference.
Freshman Samouya Nevers represents the women in the middle-distance events, toeing the line in the 800m and mile at the KMS Open. Nevers ranks third in both events in the SWAC. Hurdlers Dekari Courtney and Akili Pleas-Carnie sit in the top-five in the conference in the 60m hurdles, both expect to improve their performances.
"We look forward to having success this weekend," said coach Joseph.
SWAC rivals Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Mississippi Valley, and Southern will be among 15 other institutions competing in Sunday's meet.
The Braves begin competition on Sunday at 8:00 am with the men's and women's long jump.
