Lorman, Miss. – The Alcorn State men's and women's track and field teams will continue the indoor season this weekend as the Braves travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to compete in the Vanderbilt Invitational on Friday, January 16, and Saturday, January 17. The meet marks Alcorn State's third indoor competition of the season as the Braves continue to build momentum and measure progress across multiple events.
This weekend's meet will feature a strong 34-team field, including Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Furman, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Tulane, Tusculum, Tuskegee, UT Martin, and host Vanderbilt, providing the Braves with a high-level competitive environment early in the indoor campaign.
Alcorn State enters the weekend following a strong showing in its most recent meet, highlighted by depth and consistency in the middle-distance and sprint events. Last weekend,
Rikki Gray delivered one of the day's standout performances, capturing first place with a winning time of 1:18.34. Close behind,
Sanaa Parker finished second at 1:18.39, giving the Braves a one-two sweep and underscoring the team's strength in the middle-distance races.
In the sprints,
Derrick Williams continued a productive indoor season with a third-place finish in the 300 meters, posting a time of 33.81 against a competitive field.
Bryan Alvarez also contributed a podium performance, placing third in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:42.80 and adding valuable points for Alcorn State.
Trellas Forrest delivered one of the most consistent efforts of the meet for the Braves, competing in multiple events. Forrest placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.02 before returning later in the day to earn a second-place finish in the 500 meters, clocking 1:04.19.
With early-season performances setting a solid foundation, the Vanderbilt Invitational presents another opportunity for the Braves to sharpen execution, gain experience against a deep and competitive field, and continue building toward the heart of the indoor season.
