Chambers Climbs To Seventh On Program’s Assist Leaderboard

GRAMBLING, La. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program witnessed a piece of history on Monday evening as setter Jasmine Chambers moved into seventh place among the school's all-time career assists leaders in its 3-1 loss at Grambling State.

The Lady Braves (1-3, 1-3 SWAC) were able to take the first set but failed to capitalize on its early momentum, dropping the following three sets to fall in its first game back since February 8.

Chambers now sits on 1,174 assists during her tenure in Lorman, surpassing Vivian Aubert (2004-2006) on the ladder.

The Fort Worth, Texas native posted a double-double of 13 assists and 13 digs while also smacking five kills and a block.

Mikenzie Young-Mullins was the primary offensive threat for the Purple and Gold, clubbing 14 kills as well as providing eight digs on the defensive end.

Mariah Wilmoth set a new career-high, registering 22 digs in a superb defensive display.

Simone Barren knocked down six blocks against the Lady Tigers, her third career match with at least six rejections.

Grambling State Lady Tigers | L, 1-3 (25-20, 22-25, 12-25,16-25)

The first set saw Alcorn race out to three separate four point leads of 4-0, 6-2 and 7-3. Grambling would respond with force, peeling off nine of the next ten points to go up by four itself. With the score tied at 19, Alcorn made its final push and succeeded, scoring six of the final seven to win, 25-20.

The Lady Braves once again got off to a fast start in the second, garnering a 6-2 advantage for the second straight set. Grambling would rattle off five consecutive to retake the upper-hand at 7-6. The lead would change back-and-forth several times but things seemed to start breaking Alcorn's way as an 18-14 edge looked to be a sign of another victory. GSU made sure those thoughts were premature, putting together eight of nine and six in-a-row to snatch a victory, 22-25.

Set number three was all about the home team wearing Black and Gold, scoring on 11 of the first 13 points to begin the set and running away with things to put them on the brink of a conference win, 12-25.

After a block by Barren in the fourth made the score 5-4 GSU, the Lady Tigers got on a roll as they accounted for the next eight points to essentially squash any attempt at a comeback as Alcorn would not lead again for the rest of the night, 16-25.

Coach Robinson's crew will not have long to redeem itself, heading to UAPB tomorrow night for a battle with the Lady Lions at 6 p.m. inside H.O. Clemmons Arena.
