LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program gave its two seniors Jasmine Chambers and Mae Lewis a nice sendoff present, a three-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State in front of the home crowd.
The Lady Braves (2-6, 2-6 SWAC) hit 0.150 percentage points higher than Valley (0.234 to 0.084), shut the Delta Devilettes in the blocks department (3-0) and won every other statistical category in the sport.
Chambers topped the Lady Braves in both assists (14) and tied for the team-high for service aces (2) plus tacking on four digs as well.
Lewis had a modest stat line of four kills, three digs and a block assist during her "senior showcase".
Despite being senior night, junior transfer Mikenzie Young-Mullins stole the spotlight. The newcomer from USC Upstate matched her jersey number in kills, ripping apart the Valley defense to the tune of 17 kills and a robust 0.571 hitting percentage while tying Chambers for the team lead with two aces.
Mariah Wilmoth topped all game participants with eight digs while Tiara Adams registered a solo block and a block assist to be the only student-athlete with multiple blocks. Â

Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes | W, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-15)
The first set saw the two teams trade blows early, with MVSU taking an 8-7 advantage after 15 points. Alcorn would seize control immediately afterwards, rattling off seven unanswered and 14 of the next 17 to salt the match away, 25-15.
The second garnered similar results as a 7-3 deficit turned into a seven-all tie courtesy of a 4-0 run. The following ten points alternated between the Delta Devilettes and Lady Braves before the Purple and Gold broke the pattern with two straight to move ahead, 13-12. Valley looked as if it was going to take down the ladies from Lorman when a 6-1 rally had the visitors up late, 20-17. Coach Robinson's team buckled down and locked itself in, putting together a devastating 8-1 finishing blow to win the second set and swing the pendulum back to the home side, 25-21.
The huge run to end the second set had set the tone for the third as Alcorn doubled up MVSU over the first 24 (16-8) and never looked back en route to another 25-15 set victory plus a clean sweep of its Mississippi sisters. Â
With the victory, Alcorn improved to 49-35 versus Mississippi Valley State and running its winning streak in the series to five in-a-row.
Contrary to normal senior nights, this season it will not be the final home game of the regular season as the Purple and Gold will play its postponed match with Texas Southern from February 1 on Thursday night.
