Young-Mullins’ Double-Double Guides Alcorn Past Texas Southern

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program used a double-double from Mikenzie Young-Mullins and a dominant third set to propel the Purple and Gold to a four-set victory over TSU.

The Lady Braves (3-6, 3-6 SWAC) shutout the Lady Tigers from getting any blocks while picking up three of their own and registering six more digs (63-57).

Young-Mullins put together her second career double-double and first as a Lady Brave with a game-high 14 kills and 11 digs, plus a game-best two aces and a block assist while posting a hitting percentage of 0.414 on 29 attacks (two errors).

Jeda Curry also crossed the double-digit kill threshold, notching ten and logging half that number in digs (5).

Jasmine Chambers fell one dig short of another double-double, averaging five assists per set (20 total) and garnering nine digs.

Jurnee Calhoun also contributed a fair number of assists with 15 on the evening.

Mariah Wilmoth keeps on digging balls off the hardwood, fronting Alcorn with 14 digs.

Texas Southern Lady Tigers | W, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21)

Set one saw TSU take control early, building a five-point cushion at 10-5. Alcorn would roar back by taking nine of the next 11 to move ahead 14-12. The two teams basically traded two points to each other for the next couple of minutes before a four-nothing Lady Brave run put them on set point at 24-21. Texas Southern mounted a furious comeback however, rallying all the way back with five unanswered to win the set, 26-24.

The second set looked grim for the Purple and Gold home squad as the Lady Tigers held the lead for much of the first 38 points and were up by as much as six at one point. With Texas Southern on the precipice of a 2-0 set advantage at 22-20, Alcorn flipped the script on them by rattling off five straight to pull the reverse card on the visitors similar to set one and knot the score at one, 25-22.

Set number three was all Alcorn from the first serve, speeding out to a 12-point edge at 19-7. Texas Southern would make things interesting by crawling back to within six at 23-17 but that was the last they would score, 25-17 Lady Braves.

The fourth and final set was a seesaw affair as the home crowd witnessed nine different ties over the first 38 points with the final tie being at 19-all. The home squad would put the clamps down on the victory with runs of four and three straight with a 2-0 rally by TSU thrown in to put together its first winning streak of 2021 heading into the conference tournament, 25-21.

Alcorn closed the gap to five in the all-time series history between the two schools, trailing 11 to 16.

Coach Robinson and the Lady Braves finished its regular season slate a week earlier than most of the conference and now await its seeding for the SWAC Tournament to be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex from March 26-28.
