MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alcorn State University baseball program fell in its series opener at Alabama State by a score of 6-0 Friday night.
The Braves (5-6, 5-5 SWAC) were able to register five walks and four hits but could not break into the run column as ASU pitchers clamped down with runners in scoring position.
Kyle Jenkins had Alcorn's lone extra base hit, lacing a double in the third.
Tyler Daniels' lucky number appeared to be two on Friday, going 2-for-2 with two hits and two walks.
Tyler Smith also drew multiple free passes (2),
Khalil Smith had one and
Tristin Garcia clubbed a base hit.
Jose Fernandez gave up four hits, four runs and four walks in 6.0 innings, whiffing five Hornets.
Alabama State (7-11, 4-3 SWAC) shutout the Purple and Gold behind superb pitching performances from starter Jacknell Guzman (6.0 IP, 4 H, 5 K) and reliever Payton Harris (3.0 IP, 0 H, 4 K).
Fernandez held down the Bees bats through the first two innings before the home nine broke through with three in the third, thanks to two singles and a bases loaded RBI walk.
Bama State pushed one across in the fifth and two more in the eighth to close the scoring at six-to-nothing, ASU.
The Baseball Braves play game two of the three game set Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the Wheeler-Watkins Complex.
NOTES
- Alcorn's lead in the series has shrunk to 18 with the defeat, ahead of Alabama State 133-115-1.
